Scotland has announced a plan to phase out the sale of new petrol and diesel cars by 2032 and is therefore committed to supporting the EV industry into the future. The popularity of EVs in Scotland has increased significantly, with a 24% jump in electric car sales from 2020 to 2021. Furthermore, more electric vehicles were sold in Scotland during the whole of 2021 than in the previous five years! With ever-increasing demand, the Scottish government has vowed to install over 30,000 charge points across Scotland before 2030.
Edinburgh has also played its part in catering to its EV users. The City of Edinburgh Council was awarded £2.2 million of funding from Transport Scotland so that it can install more electric car charging points throughout Edinburgh. The council consequently installed an additional 81 charging points (141 EV charging bays) for use by the summer of 2022.
In March 2022, the Transport and Environment Committee approved a proposal for a Low Emission Zone (LEZ) to be implemented in Edinburgh’s city centre. This proposal is to help improve air quality and protect public health by restricting the most polluting vehicles from entering the city centre. It was introduced in May 2022, with enforcement beginning on 1 June 2024 (after a two-year grace period). Electric cars are not restricted by this new LEZ, allowing EV drivers to travel unencumbered in Edinburgh’s city centre.
With both the Scottish government and the City of Edinburgh Council providing continued support (and facilities) for the use of EVs, now is a fantastic time to own and charge an electric car in the capital city.
